Idli batter is very easy to prepare with the clear cut recipe given. Fermented batter is diluted a bit with 1/2 cup of water so that it gets suitable for uttappams.
Toppings are made with a combination of onion, capsicum, and spices so that the masala gives a great taste when onion gets caramelized.
Pour the uttappam thick enough so that you can load it up with lots of toppings. Here i have added just capsicum and onion. Any vegetable like tomato, grated carrot, etc can be added to make uttappams healthy. Kids who hate vegetables will also like these uttappams as vegetable is hidden and they get all the nutrition.
These uttappams can be served immediately for breakfast and dinner . Usually idli batter will be readily available in our refrigerator. Preparing the toppings will take no time and hence can be made for dinner even after your busy work day
Onion Capsicum Uttappam recipe | How to make Onion Capsicum Uttappam
Soft uttappam base topped with crunchy capsicum and caramelized onions - South Indian Breakfast served with chutney
- 5 Onions fine chopped
- 2 Capsicum fine chopped
- 1 tsp Red chilli powder
- 2 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 5 cups Idli Batter check notes
Add fine chopped onions, capsicum, red chilli powder, coriander powder and salt in a mixing bowl. Using a spoon, mix the ingredients well. keep aside
Heat a flat tawa and grease it with sesame oil. Pour a laddle of idli batter in the tawa and spread it out gently like an uttappam of about 7-8cm diameter. Drizzle ghee all over the uttappam
Using a spoon, place the toppings gently over the uttappam and let the uttappam cook over medium heat.
after 3 minutes over medium heat, gently try releasing the edges of the uttappam from the tawa and flip to cook the other sides. Now let the onions caramelize a bit and capsicum gets cooked
Serve Onion Capsicum uttappam immediately with a spicy coconut chutney and sambhar
